Essential WAN Security Tips

Security threats continue to impact countless organizations. These include phishing campaigns which lure unsuspecting users to open emails and click on embedded links. Malware, viruses, and even adware are on the rise, threatening enterprise infrastructure and productivity.

Security hacks and breaches result in billions of dollars of lost revenue for global brands and companies. It is paramount to stay abreast of all the latest security threats while implementing strategic plans to secure your wide area network (WAN).

The Risks of Unsecured WAN

For the many businesses switching to cloud-based technologies, WAN security must be at the core of any brand extension or security upgrade. Companies should fully protect remote sites and workers, along with communication tools that are needed to conduct daily business. From VoIP to video conferencing, a company’s WAN must employ the latest security protocols to effectively protect users.

Without a fully secure network, you could be vulnerable to:

  • An increased risk of viruses, malware, adware, and phishing scams.
  • Damage to software, applications, hardware, and essential business components.
  • Technical obstacles and hurdles that hinder optimal business performance and productivity.
  • Poor application protection and support that renders existing anti-virus programs useless.

When the WAN is secure, your business is secure.

Setting up Secure VPN and WAN Links

An unsecured WAN poses several risks and potential vulnerabilities. There are, however, a few tips and tricks to help defend against attacks and unauthorized access. Here are some key areas to consider in order to secure a more formidable, comprehensive, and cohesive WAN:

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) – VPNs play a pivotal role in establishing optimal network security. In recent years, countless organizations have moved away from conventional and traditional technologies including Frame Relay, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), and T1 circuits. Companies have opted for broadband internet-based VPNs, which ensure maximum performance. These technologies are also more cost-efficient and are designed to enhance existing and new security measures at every turn.

Broadband Internet VPN – Broadband VPNs can be implemented and utilized on internet protocol security (IPsec) routers. They utilize less expensive links and are better options for flexibility and security.

Adaptive Private Networking (APN) – APN includes programs like Talari, which uses constant path monitoring in the WAN to ensure little to no jitter and packet loss. APN can be utilized over a myriad of links, including high-speed internet, traditional MPLS, and Frame Relay. Packets that are routed over the internet are easily protected with advanced encryption standard (AES) encryption. In addition, intranet traffic is automatically secured without setting up a separate VPN.

WAN Encryption Is Vital

WAN encryption is critical in establishing a strong and defensible network. Encryption has become more important than ever, particularly for enterprises that have already fallen victim to security breaches and system hacking.

In the past, users trusted their national providers to offer maximum cyber security for all programs and networks. While many circuits still fall under the provider umbrella, they are no longer exempt from snooping or all-out breaches. For this reason, the extra network protection of WAN encryption is vital.
