The Challenges of Cyber Security in 2018

The landscape has certainly changed over the last few years as cyber criminals have become craftier, bolder and more successful in finding cyber security weaknesses in an increasingly digitally transformed society.

While organizations are doing what they can to protect their data, there are many new challenges facing them as they continually work to improve their cyber security strategy. One factor in 2018 that is shaping how cyber security concerns are addressed is net neutrality.
Other factors that influence security include data protection regulations in other nations, an increasingly mobile society, and the challenges organizations face as they try to avoid liability for data.

Globalization Factors

The European Union (EU) has established its own set of data regulations. However, with net neutrality now in effect, the industry has been deregulated. There was a lot of protest when this came into effect because now large corporations can start throttling data and making users pay for faster connections. A bigger issue for businesses is that there could be more costs associated with how they transmit data, which can lead to new cyber security concerns.

There will have to be a collective rethinking among organizations across industries around data storage and transmission. Rather than using highly popular cloud solutions like Dropbox and Google files, there is a trend among many organizations toward utilizing internal resources. Of course, this still requires data moving through the public cloud before it hits a private system, which still poses security concerns for organizations.

Liability Issues

Private clouds that aren’t secure will leave organizations at risk for data protection liability. For example, hosting services that give users the access they need to various software, such as Quickbooks or other similar solutions, might have to shift liability regarding data storage to the organizations that use the online platforms.

Hosting services are not likely to want to manage individual requests for data collection information, so they will shift to ease their burden and give users more liability. This should prompt organizations who have delved into data security and cyber security improvements to review their data usage and storage, and then adjust their security strategy.
