Asset Management Roles Are Evolving

If you’re still operating under an asset management strategy that was built years ago, you’re probably not running your company as efficiently as you could be. Roles are changing as technology evolves, which means asset management protocols need to evolve as well.

In a recent Gartner survey, more than 3,000 CIOs said their roles are changing from delivery executives to business executives, thanks to technological innovations and digitalization.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that there needs to be a point person for staying on top of the latest technologies and how they continue to evolve. Furthermore, this person should also manage IT assets and how they’re being used. Unfortunately, the effort to run a lean operation has many organizations ignoring this process.

Stepping Up to the Cloud
As more applications and data storage solutions shift to the cloud, it’s only natural that IT make the move as well. Instead of managing assets through on-premise solutions, including hardware and software, management occurs in the cloud and the company simply makes monthly payments.

Instead of paying close attention to what those fees are and whether you’re getting a good ROI, CIOs must make sure all cloud-based assets are monitored and that efficient use is being made of cloud storage and processes.
If you’re with the right provider, a cloud-based service will offer more flexibility to accommodate business fluctuation. One of the bigger perks that many organizations notice immediately is that there is no need to constantly maintain equipment or perform upgrades.

Asset Management Best Practices
Regardless of how you choose to manage your assets, either in the traditional method or in the cloud, there are best practices you can follow:

·       Implement software to help monitor assets
You can achieve greater visibility on your assets by utilizing software that will track them by their usage, location, and life cycle.

·       Don’t rely solely on your software for management
Don’t be afraid to use manual processes from time to time. Schedule manual audits of your assets and look for inefficiencies.

·       Replace hardware/software
Carefully consider the age of your hardware and software, as they will need to be replaced when their life cycle comes to a close. Be sure to terminate any contracts or licensing agreements for out-of-date equipment/software.
