ESG, a cybersecurity company, recently conducted a survey that offers some important statistics regarding IT security. The survey found that one of the biggest cybersecurity challenges IT professionals face is related to total cost of operations. Even with large investments in security, they aren’t seeing the results they are looking for.
Another challenge highlighted in the survey is that IT departments are often reacting to issues rather than building strategies to prevent them. If, for example, a data breach occurs, teams tend to focus nearly all their resources on the emergency rather than sustaining an ongoing focus on building a plan to improve processes. This common scenario can lead to burnout.
Resources are focused only on the emergency at hand and too much time is spent putting out fires, according to the survey. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said their biggest cybersecurity operations challenge is the time it takes to remediate. Having too many manual processes could cause this. It goes without saying that when remediation is a lengthy process, the entire enterprise is at a higher risk.
A lack of skilled labor can also be a security hurdle. Either the current team is too small or lacks in the appropriate skillsets, which means all the tasks that need to be completed are either left undone or are improperly completed. The skills shortage is evident when you consider that security services revenue is much larger than security product revenue.
Keeping up with the scale of IT infrastructure can be a pain point, even for those teams that are actually well equipped with the right personnel. Almost 20 percent of those surveyed by ESG said as their organization added new users, network hosts, and applications, they were in a constant state of “catching up.” The problem is that they never actually catch up and are thus at risk.
